Reese Witherspoon thought outside the box when designing her Nashville home—literally. Before heading out for the Country Music Awards last Wednesday, the Morning Show actress posted an Instagram photo of her standing in an arched doorway. The unexpected star: the frame—or we should say, what’s beyond it.
Baby blue lines follow along the trim and baseboards, even continuing to the molding in the other room. The effect is mesmerizing, but after taking a closer look, we realized the complex-seeming paint treatment isn’t all that hard to replicate. In fact, we’ve done it before—our style editor, Elaina Sullivan, gave us the step-by-step breakdown for painting stripes around a doorframe this summer (see the full DIY here).
In this case, you’ll only need three things to get the look: a three-inch paint roller with a ¼-inch nap, a pint of the color of your choosing (Behr’s Cornflower Blue is close to the hue Witherspoon used), and good-quality tape. Apply three strips next to one another, then pull off the center piece (if you want this line to be thicker, like Witherspoon’s, do four strips and remove the middle two). Cover the white space with paint. As it’s drying, apply another strip of tape a quarter inch away from the outermost piece. Fill this smaller gap with the same paint. Once it’s completely dry, remove all of the tape. There’s no need to go to the trouble of painting the whole room—a few bands are just as showstopping.
