There are places and spaces that just get it right: mixing high-spirited style with refreshingly authentic ideas. And there are certain designers who can masterfully bring that authentic, deeply personal part of decorating to life. Meet Madcap Cottage’s Jason Oliver Nixon and John Loecke, who took their talents upstate to give their charming cottage a true makeover. The 800-square-foot home in upstate New York, originally served as a schoolhouse in the 19th century, was in need of a little love. (Yep, it’s truly adorable.) So with the help of Laura Ashley, the dynamic designing duo set out to revive the country escape with their signature dash of whimsy and color. Take a peek.

A dynamic wallpaper print coupled with a framed street flag from the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, plays up the English country home’s rustic aesthetic. Pretty without being too prim and proper.

The subtle Laura Ashley wallpaper and bright floral curtains instantly transformed the space. In order to establish a cohesive balance within the decor, Nixon and Loecke stuck to a minimalistic approach when it came to the furniture. Seriously, this room is just calling for company.

A jumbled assortment of art and mismatched décor made this brown-walled storage space feel more cluttered than the pair intended.

After knocking down a wall to expand the space, Loecke and Nixon set out to give the attic den a cozy and intimate ambience. Oversized armchairs in color-blocked Laura Ashley upholstery complement the patterned Loloi rug and playful window shades. The rich plum walls give the space just the right amount of warmth.

The soft green palette of the master bedroom was pretty, yet a bit too plain for this lively duo. Cue the vibrant details.

Vintage nightstands and delicately layered rugs preserve the room’s traditional essence. The spirit of the space comes from the mellow lilac-toned floral wallpaper and cheerful yellow accents.
