The Next Big Rug Trend, According to Kelly Wearstler

Interior design powerhouse Kelly Wearstler is a free spirit, through and through. Her latest collection for The Rug Company is just another reminder that the Los Angeles-–based designer prefers to forge her own path.
Wearstler announced her recent collaboration with the rug purveyor on Instagram, cleverly calling her post Carte Blanche, which roughly translates to “complete freedom.” It was a fitting way to introduce Brink, one of three new patterns in the collection. “Brink embodies a textured background providing depth beyond the surface of this organic geometric design,” writes Wearstler.
The speckled motif might look familiar to those who were smitten with Kylie Jenner’s dusted rose-gold wallpaper—a detailed choice that sent the internet into a frenzy. In Wearstler’s case, the cascading dots set the stage for a much larger theme: organic geometrics. Fluid silhouettes and deconstructed shapes lay the groundwork for movement in her collection. It’s safe to say the days of monotone runners and snoozy area rugs are gone.
Here are three big ideas we are taking away from Wearstler’s latest collection.
Hand-Penned Lines
Both rigid and raw, the Verge rug’s smooth abstract movement is disrupted by a flood of imperfect diagonal lines. Often drawing inspiration from the Pacific ocean, Wearstler’s recent collaboration with Georg Jensen pulls from a similar wave-like motif. This breezy rug will transport you to a beachfront oasis.
Modern Channels
The best pieces are the ones that are inspired by the unexpected places. Wearstler’s love for modern street art and line drawings inspired this print’s melding form. Like Brink and Verge, the Tableau rug pattern is available in three different colorways.
Bauhaus Simplicity
Bauhaus furniture and decor are more relevant now than ever. Given that the design school just celebrated its 100th anniversary, Wearstler’s nod to her predecessors couldn’t come at a better time. Available only as a runner, this piece’s blueprint-like layout and attention to architectural lines will add a touch of history to an empty hallway.
