Sage green, you’ve had a good run. But we have to tell you, Sherwin-Williams has named Celery, a yellow-leaning green that balances the crispness of leaves with the energy of sunshine, as its 2027 Color of the Year. And despite its bold first impression, Celery is remarkably adaptable: Pair it with warm woods, creamy neutrals, or even other saturated hues for a look that feels layered rather than loud.
In case you need more convincing, designers are already embracing it. Ahead, we break down where the pros are using Celery, how to make the most of the hue according to Ashley Banbury, Color Marketing Manager at Sherwin-Williams, and some ways to bring the look home that don’t involve a DIY.
Where to Use It
Green pops up all the time in kitchens, but a shade like this leaves a bit more of an impression. Exhibit A: Olympian Lizzie Armanto’s L.A. home. The professional skateboarder and her design firm, Studio Hanego, used Celery in combination with a handful of other punchy shades to create mod, color-blocked cabinets. If subtle is more your speed, apply it to existing paneling. The bathroom in this Laurel Canyon bungalow designed by Gianpiero Gaglione is another example of how the color can add a touch of freshness to traditional wainscoting.
The softness of Celery would offer a good boost to most spaces, but Banbury recommends focusing on the kitchen, breakfast nooks, sunrooms, and bedrooms. For something more unexpected, she likes it in a foyer or overhead. “An entryway gives the color immediate impact in a relatively contained space, while a painted ceiling can introduce color in a way that feels subtle but still transforms the room,” she says.
What Colors to Pair With It
When in doubt, skew toward the warm side of the color spectrum. “Woven Wicker is a beautiful paint pairing,” says Banbury. “And Celery pairs especially well with materials that have warmth and visible texture—light and medium woods like oak reinforce its organic quality, while deeper woods can make the color feel more sophisticated.” If you’re going to pair it with metals, lean into aged brass and bronze to bring out the yellow undertones of Celery. “Linen, woven materials, natural stone, and handmade tile also work beautifully because they add depth without competing with the softness of the shade,” she adds
Other Ways to Try Celery
You don’t have to commit to an entire room—this color works just as well as an accent. Proof: This grasscloth coffee table and this ceramic table lamp. Step it up a smidge with celery green curtains like Brooke Harwood did in this serene bedroom.
Banbury suggests giving it a go with a bathroom vanity, a door, the back side of built-in shelving, or to revive a piece of vintage furniture. “I also love the idea of using it inside a pantry, closet, or cabinet, where it becomes an unexpected moment of color,” she says.
