Nate Berkus just took his love for moody accents to a new level. While hunkering down at home with his husband, Jeremiah Brent, and their two kids, the designer decided to paint the frame of a large mirror black. His daughter Poppy might not be a fan of the end result, but we have to commend his creativity. Because the edge of the piece isn’t your usual flat, even, wood surface—it’s wrapped in a woven, ropelike material.

Rather than swathing the whole thing in one go, Berkus took his time spacing out little dashes. This craft doesn’t call for a lot of tools, but it does require some patience: His brush was tiny and his palette was even smaller (the designer used a lid from a Behr sample can as his tray). If there were ever a time to DIY something that requires a ton of attention to detail, it’s now.

The time for craft projects at home is NOW! But ask your husbands and children first, right?! 😂

Want to take advantage of the leftover paint sitting in your garage? Sure, you can update an old side table or a ceramic vase, but why not push yourself by transforming something textural? You could easily apply Berkus’s treatment to an oversize basket, an outdoor lounge chair, a sisal rug, or some cable that you can turn into a stylish trivet. Let this be a lesson to challenge yourself.
