Chairish Predicts These 3 Refreshing Decor Trends Will Rule in 2020

The 2020 trend predictions are starting to roll in, and by the looks of online vintage retailer Chairish’s annual report, the new decade is shaping up to be bolder than ever. Verdant botanical prints, Chinese Chippendale furniture, statement mirrors, Neoclassicism—these guesses aren’t a stab in the dark. The forecast spotlights niche furniture items and decor styles, which the company’s team of data analysts has identified as increasingly in demand. This time last year, the brand anticipated animal prints, fringe, and wall sculptures would be huge in 2019—the rise of tiger rugs, tasseled light fixtures, and 3-D art installations was all the confirmation we needed. While there are 10 trends outlined in this year’s report, these are the three we’re getting behind now.
Statement Shades
As far as lighting goes, pleated shades are expected to be all the rage. Eny Lee Parker gave us a taste last week when the Brooklyn-based artist debuted a handful of large ceramic fixtures with teeny upholstered tops, sourced from her travels. Hay’s Matin table lamp offers a sleek, Scandinavian spin on the crisp folds.
Split Reeds and Bamboo
Move over, rattan. Bamboo is on a mission to replace its bohemian counterpart. IKEA is already on board (it’s now the U.K. branch’s top-selling material) and so are smaller brands like Hawkins New York, which launched a retro-beachy collection with Australia’s Sarah Ellison Studio this past summer.
Graphic Flatweaves
Casual-cool flatweave and dhurrie rugs are paving the way for the new decade. One very relatable reason we’re excited about this swap: They’re incredibly easy to clean, making them perfect additions to mess-prone spaces like dining rooms and kitchens. And if you don’t feel like putting one of these low-maintenance carpets on the floor, treat it like a work of art à la Robert McKinley, who hung a large Aelfie flatweave in his Montauk bungalow bedroom.
