We’ve Never Called Floral Patterns Edgy—Until Now
This fashion designer infused her first rug collection with nostalgia.

For someone whose prints have been described by Vogue as “almost beyond imaginable limits,” Mary Katrantzou enjoys coloring inside the lines. The Greek-born, London-based fashion designer chose a unique point of inspiration for her Spring/Summer 2018 collection: paint-by-number kits. The dresses, like the one worn by Cate Blanchette at The Cannes Film Festival, looked just like the amateur-proof canvases, with “unfinished” black and white segments next to bursts of purple, yellow, and blue blooms. Now, the renowned maximalist is bringing that same childhood nostalgia to her first-ever home collection.
Katrantzou teamed up with The Rug Company to launch a series of seven vibrant rugs, three of which (dubbed Bluebell Daydream, Garden of Eden, and Botanical Paradise) are based on the hyper-real, painterly florals she showcased on the runway last year. “The most interesting thing for me was to look at the color and scale, without having to think about a woman’s figure or where she’ll wear it,” Katrantzou says of translating the prints from dress to floor.
Known for using digitally rendered images in her clothing, the designer’s decor debut marks a shift away from the formal, traditional depictions of florals we’re used to seeing on rugs. As Katrantzou’s psychedelic take makes clear, the future of the motif is bigger, bolder, and more realistic than ever. (In order to capture the movement of the petals, The Rug Company team looked at time-lapse videos of wildflowers blooming.) Especially when paired with unexpected furnishings (the company chose to style the rugs alongside modern rattan credenzas and vibrant velvet sofas for its editorial shoot), the pieces read decidedly of the moment.
