Jonathan Adler’s 4 Favorite Trends From the 2020 Interior Design Show

It’s not our fault if you start to get the urge to renovate your bathroom. Instead, blame potter and designer Jonathan Adler, who picked translucent countertops, ultra-sleek faucets, and colorful knobs as some of his favorite trends from the Interior Design Show in Toronto last weekend.

Because Adler had a special connection to this year’s fair (he collaborated with the lead sponsor, Caesarstone, on the marquee installation), we asked him to narrow down the many booths (there were more than 100!) to his top four. The designer had his sights set on innovative finishes and vibrant hues, but all mostly centered around one room: the bathroom. Let’s just say the future of vanities is looking extremely bright.

Rainbow-Inspired Fittings

The clear plastic handles in the Nice faucet line by Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez for the Italian manufacturer Fantini Rubinetti made Adler want to run home and immediately redo every sink in his apartment. “It was the best design—so simple and so fresh,” he says. Even though the knob features only a thin sliver of color at the top (red, black, blue, turquoise, green, or white), the film creates the illusion that the grips are fully infused with the hue.

Nostalgic Forms

Ryspot Design’s squiggly, sculptural planters and vases are the perfect mix of childlike and chic. The multicolored concrete vessels definitely speak to the tubular silhouettes that took off in 2019 (remember Ara Thorose’s 7M chair?), but with a twist that’s utterly original. Your favorite succulents will look especially adorable lined up on the bathroom windowsill in these quirky-cool containers.

Soft-Looking Surfaces

Caesarstone’s semiprecious Concetto stone collection was the star of Adler’s Dreamland installation, which featured floating clouds and lightning bolts that highlight the quartz’s ethereal, translucent qualities. In your own home, he suggests pairing it with oversize feathers arranged in antique-inspired vases and playful glass sculptures.

“The nickel versus brass debate is never going to be solved, especially now that there’s a new player in town,” says Adler, referring to Franz Viegener’s moody satin black hardware (which is miraculously fingerprint-proof). Showstopping plumbing is the best swap you can make in your bathroom this year.
