Fresh from a move to our newly redesigned office in Midtown Manhattan last year, our 40-person team went to work cultivating a creative oasis. The light-filled open space necessitated that we carve out distinct areas and build from the ground up—prompting a call to the free renovation matchmaking service Sweeten, which partnered us with general contractor Best & Company to bring our vision to life. Following a custom build-out and kitchen millwork, it was time to hone in on the decorative elements.
In the living room, which doubles as the reception area, people can take a break and host smaller meetings. Our saturated emerald sofa, from Anthropologie, imparts an elegant contrast against the otherwise contemporary qualities of the office. An arched lighting sources lends an intimate feel while also instilling a sense of movement amidst the sturdier pieces of the office’s design.
A phone booth goes without saying in an open-layout office. This south-facing one is perpetually flooded by light, earmarking it as the ideal quiet spot. Entitled “the good-vibes room,” it’s where bright floral wallpaper, lots of plants, and an inspiration-filled library provide the perfect hideaway—even if we’re there to take a conference call.
Serving as the frequent photo studio and a gathering spot for lunch, our light-filled kitchen—in calming blue and simple-yet-forever-chic white subway tile is arguably the hub of the office. (Ask anyone on team Domino, and you’ll find a collective obsession with said dynamic shade of blue). Its close proximity to a fully stocked bar cart also helps.

Collaboration is an integral part of how the Domino Media Group team functions, so it should come as no surprise that an open floor plan was crucial to the layout of our new space. Our compact desks from CB2 are delightfully streamlined, bearing an understated element of elegance that fits right in with the contemporary aesthetic.
And what’s a desk space sans a mood board? With a constantly revolving cast of characters, ours stands in as a major source of inspiration, while highlighting the works we’re coveting as of now. Plus, it makes for quite the inspiring backdrop for each of our work areas.
Another true work-meets-play element: A wall-to-wall bookshelf housing just about every design, travel, and cookbook title we can get our hands on, intermixed with bright potted greens, of course. We’re beta testing music in the office (including cuing up playlists from our Domino magazine Spotify)—mostly sans lyrics for all the writers in the collaboration-friendly open space.
A color-fueled work space is happy-making, thanks to vibrant touches like a bright red Moroccan rug and mint filing cabinet. Flooded by an abundance of natural light, the aptly-named reading area is an oasis of sorts. The enveloping sofa stands in as the focal point of the area, providing an opportunity for a brief escape from our desks. Coupled with stacks of editorial reads—a full gamut of coffee table books goes without saying—the spot has come to stand in as a locale for inspiration.
The bespoke magnetic board is the latest addition to the office, and an instant favorite. Seriously, we can’t imagine life without it. At the forefront of the conception of each issue of Domino, a mood board is compiled to set the tone of what is to come—you’ll find a pared down version in-book as well. We brought the practice to life, by assembling a collection of inspiration from each of the projects you’ll find in this issue, bringing it all together in one spot.
Our completely customized Visual Magnetics board and calendar helped us do just that. More easy organization: the bench–turned–storage piece in the conference room and the glossy lacquered desks with discreet drawers.
Spending the majority of the day seated at a desk is by no means a pleasant experience. Enter: the standing desk. We have two of these streamlined pieces, which boast a constantly revolving cast of both our in-house writers and editors alike.
Tucked around a corner, the prop closet keeps dishware for styling food and entertaining stories at the ready. Using helpful organizational techniques—such as sorting items by color—we were able to make the most of the relatively small amount of space allotted for our ever-growing collection of plates, textiles, and even a handful of bigger ticket furnishings. Taking care of business never looked so good.
Who said you had to use a bar cart for a bar cart? Here, an acrylic console meant for the entry doubles as a libation station, stocked to the nines with our go-to spirits and sleek glassware to match.
We would be hard-pressed to leave any corner of the office untouched, so naturally, the small strip of walkway in the back of the office received the proper treatment. Grid wallpaper and a punchy neon cloud sign impart the narrow hall with a welcome burst of character and light.
They say first impressions are the most important, hence why when designing our reception area, we were all about establishing a streamlined area with an effortlessly chic aesthetic. A sleek marble desk is complemented by a captivating blush backdrop and a customized neon sign that seals the deal.
