Elevated minimalism and ’80s silhouettes don’t really go hand in hand—or at least that’s what we thought before we saw CB2’s newest collection. The retailer teamed up with Kara Mann for a 74-piece line that’s an ode to what the designer is calling her “teenager dream bedroom”: pleated lampshades, platinum magazine racks, and all. And while there’s a lot we’re adding to our wish list, we have a definite favorite—the ruffled cream-colored sofa.
“It’s already in my living room,” says Mann (the couch holds a special place in her heart, too). Inspired by her favorite decade, she picked a sateen slipcover and went with a feather-down cushion blend for optimal plushness. “A ruffle screams ’80s to me—everyone’s scared of the word ruffle, like they are with the words window treatment, but you can do it in the right way,” she adds.
It’s created to fit seamlessly into a neutral, pared-back palette, but you can just as easily go bolder. Pepper in some matte black accents for a high-contrast scheme, or go full Miami Vice with splashy hues and use the sofa to anchor your living room. With this fluttery style making a comeback in all types of decor—from sink skirts to slipcovered tables—we’re definitely ready for design to take a turn for the playful again. “Sometimes it’s taken too seriously,” says Mann. “It’s okay to mix things up and clash styles a bit. I really want people to have fun with this collection.”
