In between alphabetizing the best Cyber Monday sales, revealing exciting new designer collaborations, and recapping your top home decor purchases, Domino editors carve out some time to do a little bit of shopping for ourselves. Because we, too, are suckers for things like rechargeable under-cabinet lights and nice-looking hampers. Some of us made serious investments in 2024, such as outdoor sectionals, while others honed in on little upgrades, like a computer charger that looks chic even when it’s still plugged in. Naturally, some of our purchases outshined the rest. Here are the things we’re especially thankful we bought for our spaces this year.
Cordless Sconces From Pooky
I hated the harsh overhead lighting in our bedroom, but because we’re renting, hardwiring sconces was out of the question. When I learned that Pooky sold cordless wall sconces that are renter-friendly (the secret is a rechargeable battery), I bought two ASAP. They add such a warm glow to our space at night, and I only have to juice them up every other week. —Lydia Geisel, home editor
Aalto K65 Chairs From Artek
My husband and I just moved into a new apartment, and one of the furniture purchases we knew we would need to make was a couple of counter stools. Upholstered options would be too bulky for a small space, and we knew we wanted something with a back. I had been on the hunt for vintage Aalto options, but came up short for the high chair design I love. It was the right time to pick up a new pair and let the patina give them personality over the years; they’ll be my heirlooms in no time. —Samantha Weiss-Hills, managing editor
Green Coat Artwork From PSTR Studio
My small kitchen is tucked into a windowless corner of my home, and I wanted its only open wall to make a statement. I originally hung a print that had a pop of red in it, to go along with the energizing trend, but it just didn’t feel like me. When I spotted this art print of a woman looking over her shoulder, it seemed like an ideal swap. The green stripes of her coat match the ones in my Quiet Town runner, making for a cohesive detail that draws the eye up. Not to mention, the woman in the photo kind of looks like me, so I sometimes joke that it’s a self-portrait. —Kelly Dawson, writer
Incense House by Ulrike Lea
We went through a huge apartment overhaul in 2023, so this year was focused on the smaller items that make our space cozier. The thing that has made the biggest impact is this ceramic incense house from German designer Ulrike Lea Moormann. I love dropping in a Fischersund incense cone and pretending I’m a little gremlin snoozing the day away inside my dream cabin. —Erika Owen, writer
Checkered Marmoleum Flooring
We installed checkerboard Marmoleum flooring in our kitchen and mudroom. I love how cheery it is, not to mention easy to clean and soft underfoot. Living in a construction site is hard, but it’s very rewarding when even work-in-progress choices turn out to be the right ones. —Elizabeth Kiefer, writer
Aged Brass Hanging Rail From DeVol
After two unexpected leaks and a fried fuse box delayed my remodel plans, I’ve been relying on no-reno touches to bring old-world charm back to my circa-1910 home’s very 2010 kitchen. My first—and still favorite—addition was this aged brass hanging rail above my sink. My wall space is limited, but even in the smallest size (22 inches long), it immediately shifted the vibe. Matching hooks are included for displaying tea towels and mugs. Any chic pot holder recommendations to add to my current rotation are welcome. —Lindsey DeSimone, senior marketing manager
Paintable Accessories
After stumbling upon two standout spots in Toronto, curated by designers, I snagged a petite plant stand from Avenue Daughter and a stunning mirror from Betten Court Manor. With a few coats of dreamy green hues from Fusion Mineral Paint (a must-try for its gorgeous colors and effortless application), these pieces now bring so much character to my home. —Ashna Lulla, writer
Convertible High Chair From Abiie
When my daughter started eating solids earlier this year, I remember being astonished when one of my mom friends told me she just swapped out a third high chair because they were too tricky to clean. Then I thought about it…what other products in your home are you cleaning more than 20 times a week? Absolutely skip anything that has fabric or snaps and enter the Abiie: high quality, supereasy to clean, and neutral enough to leave out with the other natural wood elements in my home. It will also grow along with my baby and is made of sustainable European-cultivated beechwood. Don’t sleep on its baby dishware either. The suction silicone plates and bowls keep whole dishes from flying, and the lids make it breezy to keep food safe and handy for later. —Andie Diemer, photography director
Corner Laundry Caddy From Food52
An embarrassing truth: For a solid year after we moved into our house, my husband and I dealt with our cloth dinner napkins, dirty dishcloths, and the like by tossing them down the basement stairs in the general vicinity of our laundry room, left to pile up until wash day. Eventually, though, I simply couldn’t take seeing that heap one more day. I splurged on this rolling corner caddy, which fits perfectly into the nook at the bottom of the stairs and corrals our pitched linens off the floor. If only they magically got clean in there! —Lindsey Mather, digital director
A Barrel Coffee Table
As a family, we’re all about multifunction, so we usually only buy furniture that packs double the punch. Our coffee table is literally a barrel cut in half. There’s loads of storage space inside, but it’s also the first thing people spot when they walk in, so we tell them it’s where we keep the guests who overstay their welcome. The expressions are *chef’s kiss*. —Vaishnavi Talawadekar, writer
Outdoor Sofa Sectional Set From Article
After focusing on interior updates for the past few years, I was determined to transform my outdoor space this year. We use our pool a lot during the summer, but the large deck surrounding it was an afterthought and went unused. This summer, I got the Lubek sectional set from Article, and it’s been the best investment I’ve made in years. It created a sleek living space that’s perfect for lounging during the day, having cocktails in the evening, and watching movies at night. The deep seats and layered cushions make it just as comfortable as our indoor sofa, and there’s plenty of room for friends or sprawling out.—Brit Ashcraft, design director
