The mattress my husband and I purchased when we moved into our Hudon Valley Victorian was one of those “we just need something” kind of purchases—nothing special, just a quick fix. It got the job done for six years but, over time, I started to notice little things that I couldn’t shake: sore shoulders, sagging where each of us slept, and edges that made me feel like I might slide right off. Last winter, I finally decided it was time to upgrade. This round, I was determined to take my time and do the research.

I wanted a mattress that was pretty firm but still had some cozy give, made without harsh chemicals or materials, and wasn’t outrageously pricey. Lucky for us, around the same time, sustainably-minded brand Coyuchi released its first-ever mattress—a latex/coil hybrid that promised all of the above. Could this be the one? I had the opportunity to try it and find out.

The Coyuchi Natural Restorative EcoMaterials (REM) Mattress

Coyuchi has long been a Domino favorite—from quilts to dryer balls, we love their eco-friendly, organic products that really live up to what they promise. After recently swapping my range from gas to induction, I’ve been paying closer attention to other areas where I could go all in on a cleaner home, so I was especially curious to learn more about their new REM mattress. It’s crafted from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, GOLS-certified organic latex, and GOTS-certified wool (meaning no fiberglass or synthetic flame retardants—wool is a natural flame barrier!). As a product that’s made-to-order in the United States and crafted with seven layers, one of which has thousands of individually-wrapped coils, it had a lot going for it.

Delivery and Install

Coyuchi offers in-home installation for $100, and that includes delivery, setup, and removal of your old mattress—a huge win for us, since wrestling a mattress down two flights of stairs is an actual nightmare. Honestly, the removal alone was worth the price. Carrying and setting up the new mattress is definitely a two-person job, but once it was in place, everything was smooth sailing. Unlike my previous experiences with mattresses made with latex, there was zero odor and it expanded quickly. By bedtime that night, it was perfectly cozy and ready to go.

The REM works with or without a box spring, depending on your setup. I’m currently using one just for looks—my bed frame runs a little high—but it’s nice to have the flexibility if I want to change things up down the road. At 11 inches tall, it’s shorter than some other premium mattresses, which meant my sheets fit a little differently. Not a dealbreaker by any means, just something to note if you’re particular about how your bedding sits.

Design and Price

I really appreciate the attention to detail across the REM’s design. Sure, not many people are going to see your bare mattress, but the little touches, like the hand-tufting on the jacquard cover and the contrasting piping, really reflect the quality and care that went into making it. In all my research, and compared to other mid-range hybrid mattresses at a similar price point (the twin starts at $1,400, and the king comes in at $2,400), the REM’s design and construction truly stands out and feels worth the investment.

How It Sleeps

My favorite feature is how breathable the material is (a big positive for me as a hot sleeper). I’ve been snoozing on it since late winter, and the wool layer kept me warm without overheating. Now that temps have climbed much higher, I’m still staying cool through the night. Also, sliding off the edge isn’t an issue anymore. The REM has reinforced, structured edges that feel more like a traditional coil mattress, so I actually feel supported even when I’m sitting on the side.

As for sleep styles, we’re a combination household: I’m a side and stomach sleeper and my husband sleeps on his side, and we both find it really comfortable. I like a firmer mattress and would call the REM a true medium-firm. My husband, on the other hand, prefers this level of softness over our previously firmer mattress—so it really comes down to personal preference (as always with these things). One hitch to note if you’re sharing a bed: I do feel movement when he shifts or gets up, so it’s not completely motion-isolating, but it hasn’t been a major issue for us.

At the end of the day (literally), it’s all the little things that make a difference in how you sleep—and Coyuchi’s REM lives up to what it promises for me.
