Australians really know their way around a rug. It makes sense—high-quality New Zealand wool isn’t far away, plus there’s a commitment to sustainable design practices and artisan craftsmanship across floor covering brands that come out of the country. When I first became familiar with Armadillo a few years back, it was with its Nook collection, which is designed specifically for in-between spots like hallways, mudrooms, and laundry areas. Then, I acquired a one of the Malawi styles, finished with tasseled fringe and ribbed pile, for my hallway. Most recently, I made way for the expansive Tempest rug in my living room. You could say I’m a fan.

Another perk? Armadillo makes one of the best rug and upholstery cleaners out there (I restock regularly, and it gets bonus points for being plant-based and biodegradable). Below, I’m sharing my five favorite styles from the brand, including affordable jutes and wool you can customize with 54 different colors.

When I first saw the Agra rugs in person, it was at General Assembly’s shoppable design gallery at a SO-IL-designed building in Brooklyn. The depth of color is arresting, and the mid-height pile feels excellent underfoot while still keeping its shape. The Agra is hand-knotted from abrash-dyed wool and comes in three different sizes. While 11 hues are readily available, there are also 43 custom options to choose from.

Mesa Nook

I love the thick weave of the Mesa Nook style. It has presence and texture all thanks to the hardwearing jute that it’s made from. Armadillo employs a rarely-used, one-sided soumak technique that translates into those thick ribs, and it’s suitable for high-traffic areas like a laundry room or entry. Not to mention, it starts at just $170 and none of the three sizes is more than $400.

Tempest

Tempest Rug, 5'7"x7'10"

My living room is home to the Tempest design, which consists of all the character that hand-knotted, undyed New Zealand wool can bring to the floor. With a dog at home, I prefer the natural variation and overall light hue; it does a great job hiding hair and, even though it’s a flat weave, it’s super soft to walk on.

Lucine Nook

I’ve used the Lucine Nook in a variety of rooms, but its best home has been in the entryway.  The five-foot diameter fits perfectly in my apartment and makes the area feel purposeful. The jute stands up to all sorts of footwear, from heels and oxfords to running shoes and sandals.

Petra

Petra Rug, 5'7"x7'10"

The Petra style is Armadillo’s take on traditional Berber-style rugs in their soothing neutral palette. Hand-knotted, high-pile, and finished with tassels, the cloud-like surface feels like a meditation for the eyes. It’s the perfect bedroom floor covering in my opinion.
