It’s not news that the ’70s are having a resurgence. From mirrored walls to tubular lighting, more and more groovy decor trends have been making a comeback. Now we have one more to add to the list: Legendary mid-century designer Alexander Girard’s genre-defying artworks are reentering the public consciousness, bringing back the bold energy and experimental flair (not to mention major disco vibes) the decade is famous for.
Herman Miller is reintroducing eight of the artist’s iconic creations in poster form, available online and in select Herman Miller and DWR retail locations, in an ode to its beloved visual mastermind (Girard led the company’s textile division for more than 20 years). First produced as part of the brand’s Environmental Enrichment Panels in 1972, the designs were meant to inspire levity and playfulness in office spaces by way of daring geometric patterns and striking, unusual color combinations. Today the high-resolution wall hangings, originally screen-printed, have been carefully re-created on 100 percent cotton paper so you can bring Girard’s burst of maximalism home with you on a budget.
Within the launch are the easily recognizable Bouquet and Double Heart designs as well as other punchy prints in a variety of sizes. You can snag them unframed starting for $195, or, if you’re in the mood to splurge, add on a black, white, or natural maple frame to protect your archival piece.
Not sure how to style poster art? Consider creating a graphic gallery wall (like in this L.A. studio) out of multiple Girard masterpieces, mixed in with equally colorful works. Or if you’re hoping for a singular spotlight, hang one of the long and narrow pieces on an awkward wall space, like the tricky area between two windows. Just be warned: Once you bring the ’70s home, there’s no going back. Call us when you want your shag carpet installed.
