Adjustable shelves, double rods, and built-in drawers will get you pretty far in any closet, but even the fanciest of walk-ins will need some extra help reaching its organization potential. Clever dividers, sturdy hangers, swinging hooks, over-the-door racks—these are just a few of the products we’ve personally tested and loved, whether in a standard reach-in, linen, or front hall closet. When we asked around our office and tapped our network of interior designers for the best closet organization products, here’s what people had to say.
Vertical Wire Shelf Dividers
I edited down my shoe and handbag collection when I last moved (my two-closet house does not have space for anything that hasn’t been worn in six-months-plus). But now, I struggle to recall what’s actually left in my accessories arsenal. Did I keep the emerald green clutch or is she a goner? Enter these shelf dividers that allow my purses to stand upright and me to easily take stock of every cross-body, backpack, and tote I’ve got. I can widen or narrow the cubbies as needed by sliding each divider around, plus they don’t require a drill to install. —Lindsey DeSimone, senior marketing manager
Sturdy Wooden Pant Hangers
One product I always keep on hand are wooden pant hangers. They’re endlessly useful, gentle enough for delicate knits, but sturdy enough for scarves, skirts, or pants. In my own closet, I use them to hang beanies and even organize pillowcases and throw blankets in the linen closet. I’ve also turned them into poster hangers for long, narrow textiles. They’re basically a really great looking clamp! —Hannah Go, founder of Studio Hanego
SheetCube Bedding Organizers
I don’t have a linen closet but as a home decor enthusiast I have lots of bedding. These organizers changed everything because instead of taking up a huge amount of space, all my sheets sit neatly in a row, on half a shelf. They are literally like little file organizers for your sheets! I also label them so I know exactly what is in each box. —Alexandra Gater, YouTuber, content creator, and designer
Retractable Closet Hook
I love a retractable closet hook because it tucks away neatly but pulls out whenever I need it. It’s perfect for hanging outfit changes, steaming clothes on a hanger, or planning looks for an upcoming trip. —Stephanie Calderon, founder of Stephanie Calderon Interiors
Multi-Swinging Hook
A multi-hook is great on the interior door of an already-full coat closet to hold guest coats and then fold back up once they leave. I also love using it in bedroom closets to hold purses (hanging your purses is the best way to maintain their shape and it’s super easy to see what you have when putting together outfits). —Melinda Chesson, founder of Melinda Chesson Interiors
Elfa Over-the-Door Rack
This is the organization hero of my two-bedroom apartment. The rack was easy to mount on the inside of our laundry closet door (no tools necessary) and it can hold way more stuff than you’d think. The deepest bins are the right dimensions for stacks of spare toilet paper and paper towel rolls, while the shallow bins are best for stain remover bottles, Swiffer pads, lint rollers, and extra light bulbs. —Lydia Geisel, home editor
Clear Shelf Dividers
I have always found shelf dividers incredibly helpful. They make it easy to neatly stack purses, clothing, and other closet items while keeping everything organized and accessible. —Stephanie Calderon, founder of Stephanie Calderon Interiors
Heavy Duty Steel Wire Rack Storage
After moving into a two-bedroom apartment, I knew I wanted to turn my second bedroom closet into dedicated storage for my photo equipment. The only problem was that I didn’t want to just pile everything into an empty space. I needed an organized setup that made it easy to access my cameras and lights. These classic wire racks fit perfectly inside a standard accordion-door closet and come with adjustable shelves. Now everything has its place, and I can grab my camera bag in seconds. —Belle Morizio, staff photographer
Polypropylene Storage Wide Drawer
My husband and I share a pretty small closet. We have to be extremely tidy so we don’t end up losing folded items to the back corners. These drawer-like Muji bins have been incredibly helpful in that regard: they corral my sweaters, bottoms, and pajamas, and provide a platform for shoes that is up off the floor. —Samantha Weiss-Hills, managing editor
Wood Drawer Dividers
These drawer dividers are my go-to for organizing clothing because they bring both beauty and function to a closet or dresser. With four size options, you can tailor it to any drawer. I use them to create dedicated categories (separating workout gear and denim). It’s a small investment that pays off every day by giving your clothes a defined home and your drawer a calm, clean look. —Kat Pettey, owner of Santa Barbara and Ventura County Neat Method
Sphere Hook
I love adding a few decorative hooks in a closet—they act like a second hand when you’re putting an outfit together or need a spot for a robe. I’m drawn to pieces that feel like art, such as the Fauna Wall Hook from Casson Hardware or Ferm Living’s Mushroom Hook. For a multi-hook option, I also love the Sphere Hook from Lo & Co. Interiors. —Sarah West, founder of Sarah West Interiors
Bamboo Stackable Shoe Rack
I’ve moved with these stackable shoe racks three times now and have used them in both my personal closet and (most recently) the coat closet. Each shelf can hold three to four pairs, depending on the size (the only downside with any type of shoe rack is that there’s only one plank to display tall boots). They even look nice enough to leave out in the entryway, which I also appreciate. —Lydia Geisel, home editor
