Designers always say a pop of red makes interiors interesting, but what about a jolt of electric blue? IKEA’s color of the year is just that, and we think it brings the same dose of personality to a space. While blue is often associated with calm and serenity, this hue has movement and verve going on—whether splashed on walls or cabinetry, or dabbed on furniture and accent pillows. It’s exactly in line with what IKEA designers are betting on for next year: whimsy, boldness, getting out of your comfort zone.
In stark contrast to the moody, cozy eggplant-tinged paint we’re seeing from Benjamin Moore, Behr, and other brands that recently announced their 2025 color predictions, this hue is all energy and panache. Take, for example, the studio of Gigi Hadid’s makeup artist, Erin Parsons. Parsons dubbed her workplace, designed by Martina Guandalini, “an Yves Klein Blue masterpiece.” Our home editor, Lydia Geisel, fell in love with the cobalt Genesön chair from IKEA earlier this year when she wrote about her regular deep dives. The lapis color also calls to mind the Swedish retailer’s iconic shopping sack and swinging 1960s style (coincidentally, or not, when the bag was initially designed). Pair it with sunny yellow and a pop of pink, and you’re on your way to a mod look.
But that doesn’t mean electric blue can’t be used in quieter settings. Take this mid-century Philadelphia remodel—TBCo Architecture went all in on the color with both the kitchen cabinetry and the sink. There, it feels like an artistic flourish versus a cool cacophony. What’s cool is that electric blue can do both.
