It could get weird fast if you’re not careful.

If the past few years have seemed like a beige-on-beige blur, then 2024 is about to excite you. In the Pinterest Predicts annual trend report for the upcoming year, the social media platform singled out one room that’s going to bring the party: the kitchen. Excuse me, kitschen

According to Pinterest data, searches for “eclectic kitchen decor” have gone up 50 percent, and the even more explicit term “kitschy kitchen” has skyrocketed 75 percent. What does this mean exactly? That everyone’s looking to get a little funky in their cooking space.

Specifically, searches for “green kitchen paint” and “retro pink kitchens” have also increased, signaling that sage cabinets are about to get an intense glow-up (these lime cupboards come to mind) and vintage appliances are on the upswing.

So how do you lean into a colorful kitchen trend without it getting too weird too fast? It’s all about choosing the right mix of materials and shades. For example, in Bri Emery’s New York kitchen, wood paneling adds warmth to cool mint cabinets. And in Susan Korn’s Manhattan apartment, a rainbow palette sets the tone—literally—for her more-is-more aesthetic. At that point, you truly can’t go wrong.
