If you’ve taken a gander at our latest cover story, which goes inside the 322-square-foot Stockholm apartment of superstar product designer Gustaf Westman, you know small can swing big. His studio is a lesson in fluidity, and makes a strong case for pieces of furniture that can adapt and change over time.
While the likes of Mario Bellini’s Camaleonda and Pierre Paulin’s Dune have been around for decades, we’ve seen a bevy of consumer-facing brands embrace that idea of movement and change when it comes to couches. Modular sofas are more than just components that can move around and reassemble—they’re often small space problem solvers that can grow with you over time, making them an ultimately sustainable choice. No need to kick it to the curb when you move. See below for several new offerings we love right now.
IKEA Stockholm 2025 3-Seat Sofa
This sofa is the star of IKEA’s latest collection. Start with a loveseat and expand to a three- or four-seater, and choose from a few different upholsteries like chestnut brown and cool turquoise. The style is designed to maintain its puffed-up look over the years due to supportive pocket springs and high-resilience foam.
Hem Great Sofa
This just-debuted couch from Swedish brand Hem is designed by Canadian Philippe Malouin, who spent a number of years working for Tom Dixon. Available in nine pre-determined configurations and easily reworked to create different orientations, the Great Sofa is all about staying soft. No tools are needed for assembly, and removable, loose-fitting covers adapt to the bodies that are on it. The Cifrado upholstery here is mainly made of recycled polyester, but there is also a viscose blend as well.
West Elm Florent Sofa
The fully-upholstered look of West Elm’s Florent design balances a crisp, blocky frame with sink-in cushions that walks the line of tailored and relaxed. The high angled back is supportive while the option to choose a 39-inch seat depth lets you sit back—and the soft blue upholstery option plays lighthearted.
Silk & Snow Aire Sofa
Budget-friendly brand Silk & Snow has slowly begun to expand outside of the bedroom and bathroom, stepping into the living room with its latest release, the Aire Sofa. This piece can be arranged 85 different ways and is semi-customizable when it comes to seat depth, length, and adding extra pillows. Apartment-friendly couches start at just $1,300 and are the kind of staple you’ll just want to add to as the years go by.
Sundays Lift Off Reclining Sectional Sofa
Who knew a reclining sofa could look so good? Sundays did, and made it modular to boot. We love that the controls are discreet, plus there are integrated charging ports and the footrest only needs a few inches to fully extend.
Soho Home Odell Sectional Sofa
Besides its modular aspects, the fabric options and cool design details make this Soho Home style a living room stunner. Even in its most petite version, the Odell’s low profile invites lounging and its arched back makes it a looker from any angle. With this piece, you won’t need much else to make a statement.
Castlery Fable Sofa
Castlery has an entire section of its website dedicated to modular sofas, and the designs run the gamut of style, from traditional to midcentury. Two new introductions, the Fable and the Solari, employ rounded edges in different ways. The Fable offers curves in nubuck leather, with no-arm options to keep things open-ended. The Solari is like a hug in sofa form, with olive-hued boucle and ’70s vibes to go along with that. Take it from loveseat to sectional just like that.
Sixpenny Sectional Sofas
Every Sixpenny sectional is modular—each component connects via a zinc alligator clip on the underside. Adding ottomans offers extra seating, and we love the brand’s suggestion of creating a loveseat and chair set by just detaching the middle portion of a couch. You can also request an individual part via email if needed.
Audo Eave Rounded Sofa
Audo expanded their Eave line to encompass a curved module, which lets you snake around odd corners or create a unique oval design that’s nice to lean over for a chat.
Lulu and Georgia Abbot Indoor/Outdoor Sectional Sofa
Modular sofas aren’t only for interiors—and this Sarah Sherman Samuel design for Lulu and Georgia proves it. Each portion is made from solid teak wood and finished with performance fabric-clad cushions, and it goes with the rest of the Abbot collection seamlessly, making changes in layout that much easier.
The House of Noa Play Couches
Modular furniture is ideal for kids, and especially when it’s as whimsical as House of Noa’s play couches. The foldable base and backrest are made of soft yet sturdy foam, and all the not-childish fabric is removable and machine-washable. We’d go so far as to say these would be right at home in a dorm or first apartment, too.
