The spirited mix-and-match aesthetic of Madre, a new children’s furnishings shop, brings color and pattern to the playroom.

“TAILORED LAYERING”

is how Mia Brous, Kerri Goldfarb and Louise Marsh describe their approach to decorating kids’ spaces. The three moms first bonded over a shared background in interior design and launched their children’s furnishings shop, Madre, a year ago. Starting with the bright coral door, the playful yet polished space is a breezy mix of bold prints, splashy colors, and whimsical accessories, like a menagerie of oversize plush safari animals and a set of fuchsia melamine drinking glasses. Parents can custom design headboards and window treatments, adding a personalized touch. “Everyone remembers their childhood bedroom,” says Brous. “It’s the first room you get to do from top to bottom without inheriting a bunch of furniture. You can start fresh.”

3 TIPS FOR ADDING A DOSE OF STYLE TO THE KIDS’ ROOM

  1. Think long-term.

A nursery should be able to last for each of your babies, or transition to a toddler room. Buy a dresser you love and just put a changing pad on top for the diaper years. Crib skirts in different colors and patterns are great if you’re switching from boy to girl.

  2. Fun can be functional.

We always recommend having a slip- covered glider that can easily be cleaned, and using fun baskets as your laundry hamper. We often include a custom day bed in the nursery, since you inevitably end up sleeping there! It becomes a comfy couch, where the whole family can gather.

  3. Make it your own.

You spend quite a bit of time in the nursery, so it should be designed for both parents and baby to enjoy. Buy artworks you find meaningful, or even try to incorporate a few items from your own childhood.
