Unfortunately, Katharine Hepburn’s famed Connecticut beachfront estate is no longer on the market. Two years after the property went up for sale at an asking price of $14.8 million, it finally sold for $11.5 million at the end of August 2017.

The actress had owned the Long Island Sound residence for a long time, using it frequently for family vacations. In fact, according to Elle Decor, Hepburn’s parents were the ones who first purchased the home in 1913. Following a brush with a hurricane in 1938 that completely washed the home away, Hepburn rebuilt the home that still stands today.

Nicknamed “Paradise”, the recently-renovated (as of 2005) residence is now full of light with several contemporary touches. Sitting on 1.5 acres of land, overlooking the Long Island Sound, the exterior features a private dock, beach, and pond. A wraparound porch that includes seating and dining areas offers views of the surrounding area.

Three floors boast six bedroom suites and 8,400 square feet of living space. There are seven fireplaces in the sunny home, which are one way the updated home preserves some of the original historic detail. Other similarly charming accent pieces include an antique chandelier over the dining room table and crown molding running throughout the house.

Besides a few pops of blue, the color palette for the estate is strictly white. This, coupled with shiplap ceilings and bay windows that overlook the, well, bay, lend a beachy and almost nautical feel to the space.

Downstairs, a grand entry leads to a living room, sitting room, dining room, and gourmet kitchen. The open kitchen includes custom cabinetry paired with marble counters, as well as a center island that has bar seating for more informal dining.

In the upstairs stories, each bedroom has an accompanying en-suite bathroom and is similarly decorated in a simple, nautical design. If one thing’s for sure, it’s that the lucky homeowner will have no shortage of space.

We mean this quite literally: The famously private actress purchased over three additional acres of surrounding land and designated them to remain forever open, turning the property into a secluded oasis.
