From couture fashion to exotic sports cars, we often look to Italy in search of the most meticulously designed lifestyle luxuries. Milan, specifically, comes to mind for producing globally recognized arbiters of style, so when Danish design brand Gubi decided to expand its outdoor furniture assortment, collaborating with a Milanese designer was an obvious choice. This March the brand will debut Bohemian 72, a collection in partnership with Archivio Gabriella Crespi.
Not only is Gubi honoring what would have been designer Crespi’s 100th birthday, but it’s bringing back some of her iconic pieces from the ’70s that were once only available to her private clients. Crespi’s interest in natural elements, fascination with stacked sculptural forms, and worldly curiosity are resurrected with the rattan-centric reveal of Bohemian 72. The star of the new line is easily the three-seat sofa, built on a foundation of bent, antique-stained canes with a glossy finish and topped with a sleek yet supremely soft cream-colored cushion. There’s also a lounge chair, an ottoman, and a floor lamp that features brass detailing, all available online and in stores starting in mid-March.
Gubi worked from Crespi’s original drawings to bring these designs into production for the first time—50 years after they were conceptualized (she designed them in the spring of 1972 from the terrace of her home in Milan, naturally). When the pieces were originally conceived, rattan was viewed as the height of interior sophistication, but Crespi’s choice to layer the vertically coiled stems was a fresh approach, resulting in a timeless take on lounge furniture. (Even in 2022, the sculptural items are considered totally chic.)
Indoors, outdoors, in an urban loft, or on a beachfront balcony, the revived finds will lend Italian elegance to any space. But Crespi’s legacy doesn’t have to stop there. While you wait for the big launch date, snag a few smaller rattan accessories to bring the boho vibe full circle.
