Shea McGee is adjusting to the spotlight. Her feed of soothing neutral interiors and detail-driven renovation ideas have always grabbed the attention of followers, but after the launch of her and husband Syd’s new Netflix show, Dream Home Makeover, in October 2020, her fan base skyrocketed. “The thing that’s so wild about being on Netflix is that it’s an international platform,” McGee tells Domino’s editor-in-chief, Jessica Romm Perez, on this week’s episode of Design Time (out today on Spotify and Apple Podcasts). “We have people following us from all over the world now. It’s been really fun to see our audience grow in new ways.”
In their conversation, McGee shares her first step in any renovation project (she lets the home speak to her) and the perfect hues to accent white walls (anything warm and cozy), as well as the 10 things inspiring her right now. Take a sneak peek, below.
Design Heroes
I’m always very interested in following architects because they’re so closely associated with design, but it activates a different part of my brain. Bobby McAlpine, Jeffrey Dungan and Gil Schafer…I just love following architects.View this post on Instagram
Favorite Colors
I can’t get enough of creamy, beigey gray. I use this color called Natural Cream by Benjamin Moore a lot, which encompasses all of those shades. I love it on kitchen cabinetry. I also never get tired of Swiss Coffee as a warm white.Dream Destination
The South of France. That was the vacation we took for our anniversary two summers ago. It was all antiques, the ocean, beautiful design, fresh flowers, good food. Basically all of my favorite things in one place.
Hotel Hitmaker
It’s been so long since I’ve been anywhere, but my favorite place on earth to vacation is Alys Beach in Florida. The ocean is amazing. The architecture is beautiful. I love going with our family.
Plant Pick
An olive tree is one of my favorite things to add to a room.View this post on Instagram
Go-To Design Object
Pedestals. They used to be a stuffy decorator thing, but they’re cool again and I’ve been using them a lot. What I’m Watching
I just binge-watched The Queen’s Gambit. There was really good style in that show.
Favorite Retail Source
Besides McGee & Co., I use 1stdibs a lot, especially now. I could spend hours on that site; it’s so fun for me. I find a lot of great things on Etsy, too, and at a really good price point.Iconic Furniture Style
I love Belgian and English farmhouse styles that are very simple and have a bleached-oak look to them. That’s what I’m always on the hunt for these pieces as an accent to pretty much any room we design.View this post on Instagram
Wind-Down Vibe
Working out is my time, mostly in the morning. And then at the end of the day, Syd and I love to watch Netflix—even just one episode of something before we go to bed.Our Winter Renovation issue is here!
