Almost two decades ago, JJ Martin made a permanent move to Milan, where she began selling her impressive collection of vintage clothing online. Years later this impromptu endeavor turned into her now famous brand, La DoubleJ, a one-stop shop for all things playful, bold, and showstopping. From groovy silk dresses to effervescent table linens, the label’s maximalist approach allows shoppers to bring the European lifestyle home with them. “Italians are so carefree and yet glamorous at the same time,” Martin explains to Domino’s editor at large, Jessica Romm Perez, on this week’s episode of Design Time (out today on Spotify and Apple Podcasts). “There’s so much beauty around them at all times. I’ve learned a lot from them.”

During their conversation, Martin spills about La DoubleJ’s new homewares collaboration with Ladurée (inspired by the tree of life), her best vintage-sourcing tips, and the 10 things inspiring her right now. Catch a few highlights, below.

Dream Destination

Egypt and India because I’ve never been to either place. For sure I had a past life in Egypt, and I dream about it a lot. I cannot believe I’ve never been.

Material of the Moment

I’m so cliché, but velvet for interiors. And I’m obsessed with bamboo and rattan.

Plant Pick

Tulips, peonies—I just love big blooms that burst open.

Favorite Color Pairing

I’m looking right now at magenta and orange, and it’s very satisfying.

Calming Hue

I would say the pink in my living room. I mixed it with my painter, so it’s a dusty rose.

Hotel Hitmaker

The Bambu Indah in Bali. The entire hotel is made out of bamboo. It’s so aerodynamic and natural. It is paradise on earth.

Divine Inspiration

I really get inspired inside Sicilian Baroque churches. I find them to be these meditative environments. They’re extremely inspirational. All of the ceilings are painted. There’s so much artwork; it’s unbelievable.

Must-Watch TV

I love anything that is about magic. Like Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings or Merlin.

Object Obsession

My couch. I just look at it all day long. It’s the most perfect blue and the proportions are so perfect.
