Celeb interior designers know their stuff–they play to a tough crowd. That’s why we’re trusting advice from Don Stewart, John Legend and Chrissy Tiegen’s interior designer, who is currently hard at work on their nursery! We’re huge fans of the gender-neutral approach to nurseries, and Don is, too. Here, he shares some of his favorite tips (and tired trends to retire), for you to bring to life for your little one.

What do you see as the next emerging trend in gender-neutral nurseries?

As far as emerging trends go for gender nurseries, I see age-neutral decor. Your nursery can still be sweet, pretty but this is also the room that grown up Mommy will be spending quite a bit of time! Make it a room for you as well as your newborn.

What do clients request for their nurseries most often?

Gender-neutral and not overly cute…sophisticated babies are emerging!

What is one nursery styling mistake you never want to see again?

Sheepskin, fur rugs, acrylic cribs!  Oops, you said one.

What is one absolutely essential nursery decor item that you suggest to your clients?

Soft lighting… Phillipe Starck’s Rosy Angelus is always a winner.

What is the most surprising color scheme you’ve tried (and loved) in a gender neutral nursery?

Indigo, midnight blue.  Ralph Lauren’s Occulus blue is gorgeous.
