Knowing where to find the best furniture and decor is a skill that can take months (if not years) to refine. So in the spirit of sharing, we’ve launched a mini series where our editors open up about their favorite sources for everything from affordable furniture to lighting, pottery, kitchenware, and more.

You may have heard this popular saying—in the design world at least—before: Lighting is the jewelry of a room. And it should be treated as such. Think about what you’d find in your jewelry box: You probably have some heirloom pieces passed down from your parents or grandparents, some fun costume jewelry you picked up at a mass retailer, and maybe a few investment pieces you saved up for and cherish.

The lighting in your home should be no different. You might find a Target table lamp here, a vintage floor lamp there, and a newly purchased statement chandelier you saved your pennies to buy. Maybe you live in a rental and opted for affordable plug-in sconces or you recently bought a new home for which you decided to invest in quality overhead lighting. The bottom line is that no matter your budget, a varied array of lighting will always make your home feel more collected and elevated. If you’re in need of a starting point for your lighting shopping, here are seven stores our editors are particularly fond of.

Dutton Brown: “I recently heard about this brand from a designer and have since become obsessed. Almost all its fixtures incorporate color in some way. I’m a huge fan of its sconces. Its Lepore Acrylic Sconce in mint is speaking to me right now.”

MoMA: “I love MoMA for its eclectic array of lighting options that challenge all preconceived notions of the staple. The majority of them can double as sculptures or decorative accent pieces—consider it your ultimate source for unconventional lighting.”

Schoolhouse Electric: “I struggled to find well-designed plug-in sconces when I was decorating my East Village rental until a friend recommended Schoolhouse. It has a ton of well-priced, quality sconces that don’t require hardwiring, which is a win for anyone with an annoying landlord.”

Allied Maker: “I don’t own any Allied Maker pieces (yet), but I love its beautiful and versatile assortment of lighting. While it is a higher-end brand, some pieces are surprisingly affordable. For instance, I probably won’t introduce its $35,000 Alabaster Totem—a personal favorite—into my home anytime soon, but I can see myself shelling out a few hundred for these concentric sconces for my next home.

Huset: “If you like Scandinavian design, you probably already have Huset bookmarked, but don’t sleep on the lighting section. Featuring an array of brands from Menu to Normann Copenhagen, the shop has every type of lighting you’ll ever need at a mid-range price point. I’ve had my eye on these super-simple Muuto pendants for ages. I just can’t pick which color to get!”

Target: “I don’t want my lighting to simply fade into the rest of my room, but I don’t want to shell out a ton for a statement light that, realistically, I might be over in a year or two. That’s why I love turning to Target for all my room-brightening needs. Its Project 62 line includes several mid-century-inspired brass floor lamps that appeal directly to my taste, and Leanne Ford’s brand-new collection offers some more experimental picks (think: exposed Edison bulbs and a wide assortment of woven pieces). With most prices falling under $100, I know I don’t have to stress about staying under budget to get the playful look I’m aiming for.
