“Aromatically speaking,” begins the description on indie film production company A24’s newest product, “the movies have historically been limited to wafts of hot butter, worn velour, and failed experiments with Smell-O-Vision.” Now, however, they’re becoming associated with far more elevated scents in the form of a very unexpected collaboration. Joining forces with fragrance studio Joya, A24 has released a line of six different movie genre-themed candles.

Known for movies like Lady Bird and Eighth Grade, as well as its avid Timothée-Chalamet-and-Lucas-Hedges-stanning fanbase, A24 is not new to untraditional merch. It’s previously released gimmicky buys like a mini skateboard for Mid90s and a Lady Bird name patch, but this is its first foray into the home sphere—and it’s very good.

The genres featured in the candle line include horror, thriller, noir, musical, western, and adventure, each with a burn time of 50 to 60 hours—or, about 33 movies. The fragrances themselves take specific inspiration from their genres, and transform it into entrancing olfactory experiences. Horror, for example, is inspired by fangs, glowing eyes, and lakeside cabins, which translates into a leathery scent with notes of mandarin and clove leaf. Musical, on the other hand, draws its cues from lamp posts, top hats, and pianos, resulting in a green, fig leaf and pink pepper aroma.

At $48 per candle (or $120 for a set of three) the collection is a luxury pick, but with the promise of nearly 60 hours of pure, aromatically expressed movie magic, we think they’re a worthy buy. They might just be the final touch you need to make your home feel truly cinematic.
