Bamboo was the word on the street this year at Salone del Mobile, the design world’s annual rendezvous in Milan for new products, exhibitions, and installations. Not as a component of fabric or sheets, which has felt like the use du jour, but the plant’s organic knobby form in all its glory. Just one example: Gucci’s presentation was focused entirely on the sustainable plant, which highlighted several designers working with it in novel ways. Serena & Lily’s newest arrivals included faux detailing in the Ravello collection, designer Jake Arnold added touches to his latest Crate & Barrel release, and we’ve spotted bamboo-shaped taper candles, table legs, and even drapery rings out in the wild. Whether the material or motif, bamboo has been increasingly employed in furniture, decor, and tabletop lately—not to mention across fashion. See our picks of the moment.
Furniture
Whether made from real bamboo or just in its image, we love vintage nightstands, new bed frames, and even coffee tables adorned in this instantly recognizable silhouette.
Decor
After seeing the style pop up across cabinets, lamps, mirrors, and even rugs, we can confidently say you can put bamboo just about anywhere. Just one piece will add a dose of personality, a la a pop of red.
Tabletop
Bamboo on your flatware, plates, and platters—you don’t have to choose.
Bits and Bobs
There’s something seductive about wearing a little bamboo, be it in the form of a purse handle, jewelry, or even a pair of sunglasses.
