Iris Apfel will always be remembered for her over-the-top aesthetic. In celebration of what would have been the legendary style icon’s 103rd birthday, Ruggable is launching a limited-edition collection featuring two never-before-seen designs, conceived before her death earlier this year.
The maximalist Ambroeus Royal Plum design crosses traditional aesthetics with the abstract: poppies zigzagging across a plum background with a contrasting striped border—don’t miss the attention to detail in the ladybugs peppered throughout the buds. The second design, Protea Forest Green, features a mirrored botanical motif in greens, purples, and yellows, with hummingbirds dotting the idyllic garden setting. The spirited rugs will liven up any demure space or can layer into an already eclectic room.
Both designs were inspired by Apfels’s personal textile collection. “One of my favorite quotes from Iris, ‘Life is a banquet,’ served as our starting point,” says Claire Pinckney, Ruggable’s creative strategist. “She had gathered memorabilia and swatches over the years, each with a story that she delighted in sharing.”
Ruggable has worked with Apfel for years. Two successful previous collections are now available through 2030. “Iris’s style ethos centered around the importance of self-expression (she often attended Zoom meetings with space buns in her hair), and we’ve embraced that vibrant spirit with our latest collection,” says Cassandra Leisz, Ruggable’s senior creative director. “She told us that people should take more chances in life and design and embrace originality when decorating a home—to study who you are and become a collector of things that you love.”
