From fueling a mid-sleep sheet-fluffing session to inciting full-on tossing and turning, crumbs under the covers are one of the biggest sleep-disturbing culprits. According to a recent study from Serta Simmons Bedding, 80 percent of Americans say finding unwelcome leftovers leads to their worst nights of sleep. And yet more than one-third of the respondents still admitted to eating in bed.

Those surveyed also revealed that another common interruption is feeling hot (76 percent said they often wake up to kick off a comforter or turn down the thermostat). On the flip side, the data also showed the key to catching more z’s may start in the morning: Seventy-seven percent claimed crawling into a freshly made bed helps them rest easier.

JD Velilla, Serta Simmons Bedding’s head of sleep experience, recommends jotting down the sources of your disturbances so you can come up with a fix. “If something wakes you in the middle of the night, write it down and see if you can find a product or solution for it,” he advises. No matter what your bad bedroom habits may be, here are a few items to add to your sleep-inducing shopping list.

For Midnight Snackers

If you just can’t shake those late-night cravings or you like to indulge in breakfast in bed, a stylish tray is a must-have for in-room dining. And you may want to add a waterproof protector to the list while you’re at it to save your mattress from coffee stains or nightcap slip-ups.

For Hot Sleepers

What if we told you you could have a cool-side-of-the-pillow feeling all over your bed? Set yourself up with a trifecta that includes the best moisture-wicking sheets, mattresses, and pillows, and you can say goodbye to those sticky night sweats.

For Messy-Bed Enthusiasts

According to Velilla, tidying up your bed starts your morning on the right note and creates a moment to look forward to when tucking yourself under the covers that evening. Make the chore more enjoyable with cozy bedding that matches the season or an oversize quilt that looks put-together even when you just toss it on. Your parents might have been on to something.
