I Spent All Weekend Regretting I Never Bought This $45 IKEA Beach Chair

The stars need to align for me to truly relax at the beach. That usually involves shade, a slight breeze, and peace and quiet. Most importantly, I have to feel comfortable. I already know that a flat towel is not the move for me—no matter which way I turn, it never seems optimal for reading. As I was sitting in my folding chair this past weekend, attempting to crank through another 50 pages before lunch, all I could think about was how badly I wanted to stretch my legs and really lean back. I kept wishing I was lounging on a chaise…and then I remembered portable beach versions actually exist.

It all came back to me: IKEA released a portable beach chaise this same time last year. And to my surprise, the Swedish retailer still carries the foldable Strandon sun lounger. The $45 find has everything I need to properly zen out: a zippable pouch in the back where I can store my phone and sunscreen, elastic bands that’ll keep my towel in place if it’s windy, an adjustable back position, and plenty of room to stretch out without getting sandy.

Knowing I’ll be back at the beach in less than a week, I started scrambling for a foldable chaise. The only problem with the IKEA one is that it isn’t available for delivery in my location. So, here are a few other easy-to-carry options I’m seriously considering.

This one is three times the cost of IKEA’s version, but its cushy padding and chic stripes help make up for the price. Like the Strandon, there is a storage pocket incorporated into the back rest and it weighs under four pounds, which makes the journey from the car to the sand a pleasant experience.

If you don’t have to schlep your chair very far, this souped-up lounger might be a better fit. It has four adjustable reclining settings, a sun shade (my favorite feature), and a sturdy wooden frame.

No carrying strap makes this one a little less beach-friendly, but the Italian-made piece, originally designed in the 1970s, is built out of ultra-lightweight aluminum. That makes it absolutely portable.
