After Hills alum Whitney Port became pregnant, she knew she had to move from her sprawling loft in Venice to a space more conducive for a family. So, she and her husband decided to purchase a new home in Studio City. “We had our work cut out for us and still do, but we have loved making this space our own,” says Port. “We loved the high-vaulted ceilings with skylights, and that the majority of the house looked out onto our yard with a pool and views.”
To transform the bright, airy home into a charming, family-oriented space, Port turned to Joss & Main for a fresh makeover. “Whitney’s new space was a blank slate, and it was so much fun to look at inspiration images together and talk about how she wanted the rooms to look and feel. We knew from the start that she wanted a collected, bohemian aesthetic in her bedroom, and that she hoped to incorporate plenty of pattern and texture,” says style director Donna Garlough. “But she also wanted the space to feel clean and airy.”
This couldn’t be more apparent in Port’s master bedroom—think bright white walls, a vintage-style rug ($140.99), cozy, neutral shams ($43.99), and a woven bedroom bench ($229.99). As Garlough explains, the neutral bedding and walls were necessary in order to create the blank canvas needed to play with several materials and fabrics.
She says, “Starting with crisp white walls and simple white bedding ($113.99), we began to layer in natural and neutral pieces with subtle personality, like the woven leather bench and chair, and a washed jute rug reminiscent of a vintage Oriental style. Our team added touches of indigo, handmade baskets ($53.99), and fresh greenery ($96.99) for a breezy, California vibe.”
But for Port, the best part of her bedroom is the cozy nook Garlough’s team created just for her near the floor-to-ceiling windows.
“I use it to do work, have a glass of wine with friends that come over, pump!” says Port of the space. “The indigo striped settee ($529.99) is just so cute. When I lived in Venice, I basically lived in my closet. The place had no closet space, so I made an entire wall of our room a closet. I knew when we bought this house, I wanted our bedroom to feel like a sanctuary. This seating area does just that for me.”
This breezy, California-inspired theme continues to the nursery, where Port plays with neutrals in a way that’s reminiscent of some far-flung destination. Garlough explains, “We went for a gender-neutral palette of white and sand, and brought in touches of black, green, and warm terracotta in the rug ($112.99) and pillows ($24.99). Plenty of natural materials like wood, leather, rope, and woven seagrass added character and texture.”
The tree-printed wallpaper—which is a steal at only $1.31 per square foot—adds interest without being overwhelming, and two large windows allow for plenty of natural light.
Port says, “Since we didn’t find out the sex of our baby, we wanted the room to be very gender neutral without being too boring. I wanted the nursery to match the master in vibe—Moroccan accents, light wood finishes, neutral colors—but also have a sort of whimsical, fairytale aspect to it. That’s where the wallpaper came in. It was a last minute addition, and I absolutely love it! It’s such a pretty print, in the right color without being too gender specific.”
Garlough adds that the furniture needed to work for both baby and parents. She says, “We brought in a twin-sized linen daybed ($309.99) for cuddling with Sonny during the long nights, a sleek changing table ($299) to coordinate with the modern crib (that also doubles as a dresser), and a crisp modern glider and ottoman ($499) for rocking him to sleep.” The result? The perfect space for both mother and baby.
