Folding chairs can get a bad rap—Too utilitarian! Too heavy!—but thankfully today’s outdoor chairs are cuter (and more portable) than you remember. From woven classics to rope versions that offer superb support, the best folding chairs are actually pretty and functional.

And we love their versatility. You can just sling one over your shoulder when it’s time to go to the beach or head outside to the patio. Plus when you’re done (or when the season is over, though we’re not ready to go there yet, mentally), you can fold it up and stow it away.

We’re not the only ones who are obsessed with finding the best folding chair. According to a new report, sales for camping gear are up 130 percent from 2019. Here are our current favorites.

The Classic One: Lawn Chair USA Folding Webbing Chair

Orange & White Classic Chair, Amazon ($70)

Remember this woven wonder? Well, it’s officially back. Set a few different color combos around your backyard firepit and wait for the compliments to roll in.

The Compact One: Parks Project Shrooms Camp Chair

Shrooms Packable Camp Chair, Parks Project ($110)

Surprisingly the almost-psychedelic mushroom pattern isn’t the best part about this packable chair. It folds up to what the brand calls the size of a California burrito and only weighs 2.5 pounds. Finally you’ll be a light packer.

The Minimalist One: Snow Peak Bamboo Chair

Take! Renewed Bamboo Chair, Snow Peak ($180)

Made from bamboo and with Japanese flair, this canvas seat is almost too chic to be considered an outdoor chair. What it lacks in armrests it makes up for in stylishness.

The Cool One: REI Co-Op Chair

REI Co-Op Outward Rope Chair, West Elm ($140 for 2)

Bring this polyester rope chair on your next camping trip, and we promise someone will call dibs on it for the entire weekend. (Thankfully it comes in a set of two.) Not only is the design undeniably cool, the ropes are really comfortable for long hangs (or, ya know, ghost stories).

The Bright One: Helinox Sunset Chair

Sunset Chair Home, Helinox ($175)

In a warm sunset-like shade, this ultra-durable chair, which folds up into a compact pouch, is a cozy place to watch, well, the sun set.

The Easiest One to Carry: REI Classic Lawn Chair

REI Co-op Outward Classic Lawn Chair, REI ($80)

Even though this sage-colored one looks like a classic lawn chair, two backpack-style straps make it supereasy to tote from the car to the campsite.
