We Asked a Designer for Her All-Time Favorite Finds on Etsy

Nowadays there are plenty of ways to shop for one-of-kind designs, whether it’s at flea markets or scrolling through Instagram for vintage auctions. But Nashville-based interior designer Jessica Stambaugh’s favorite go-to for pieces she can’t find anywhere else is a true classic: Etsy.
When Etsy launched 16 years ago, it had a crafty connotation. Today it’s a refined shopping spot with tons of professionally made (and well-priced) wares from around the world. “Naturally in my sourcing, I like to use a lot of international crafts and vintage from different cultures, so Etsy kind of became a back-pocket resource for finding things that aren’t necessarily conventional American mid-century vintage,” says Stambaugh.
But it can be hard to navigate the site’s thousands of shops, so she has a trick: Search by material, not by item. For instance, if she’s designing for a room that needs a hit of clay, she’ll search the word terracotta (instead of, say, terracotta pot) so that she can sift through the results—and she’ll often be surprised by what she finds. The same goes for patterns, such as checkerboard or paisley.
