The ideal work-from-home setup looks a bit different for everyone. For some, it’s a corner of the bedroom that gets a good deal of natural light. For others, it’s a newly repurposed portion of the living room. And for an increasing number of people, it’s a backyard structure that now operates as an office: Prefabricated sheds are having a moment.

As The New York Times reports, many prefab companies, such as Modern Shed and Studio Shed, have seen increases in orders and interest since April, as people search for social distancing–friendly solutions to their day-to-day needs. Sheds offer plenty of functions, after all. A number of homeowners find benefit in a short commute across the yard to have a quiet place to get some work done. Others enjoy them simply for the extra space: room to exercise, practice music, do a craft, or get some much-needed alone time.

A shed can feel as comfortable and inviting as the rest of your home, too—it just involves a bit more strategy when you’re designing a small space. Here are three ways to get the backyard office of your dreams, whether you’re starting from scratch or amping up a prefab option.

Go All White to Open Up the Space
