IKEA is constantly dropping new products and it can be hard to keep up, but this week’s introduction deserves a spotlight. The Swedish retailer just released a collection called Bäsingen, which consists of six items designed to lend a helping hand and support people in their independence at home. “There are many people who experience impactful and common circumstantial changes that can make something as simple as taking a shower challenging. Yet, we see that the home environment is often not equipped for change,” says product design developer Wâtte Zijlstra.
Primarily focused on making the bathroom a more accessible space, the line includes two different step stools with a rail, a shower stool, a toilet roll holder, a towel rail, and a shower shelf. In true IKEA form, the colors and silhouettes are rooted in minimalist Scandinavian design, but with an extra functional touch: they are sturdy and have non-slip feet, plus holes for water drainage. The edges of the tubular frames are thick enough for a comfortable grip, allowing people to support themselves while moving around.
“I hope people will enjoy Bäsingen products throughout different stages of life,” says Sarah Fager, a senior designer at the company. “Maybe they will use the products a bit less during certain periods, but they are always close at hand, ready to provide support.’’
While not as robust as Pottery Barn’s ADA-compliant furniture collection (yet), IKEA’s is certainly more affordable, with prices ranging from just $12 to $39. We hope other major home brands take note.
