The Best Design Comeback of 2025

A controversial seating choice, reinvented.

If you were a kid and there was a recliner in the room, you ran straight for it. You didn’t care that the puffy leather seat was a total eyesore or that the footrest flung up with enough force to toss your legs in the air; you knew it was the best seat in the house. But as an adult, you’re probably not so willing to sacrifice style in the name of comfort. Recliner sofas have long been a controversial choice—or, at least they used to be. Sundays made 2025 the year of restoring its reputation, earning its Lift Off Power Recliner our first-ever Comeback of the Year award.

This spring, the Vancouver-based brand bravely sprung into the category with the launch of the Lift Off. Like many other modular sofas, you can pick the configuration that best suits your space, whether that’s a two-piece loveseat or a five-part L-shape. What sets it apart is that its cushions can recline at the push of a button—you’d just never know by looking at it.

“We wanted a silhouette that felt timeless, so the fact that it reclines becomes an added surprise, rather than the focal point,” says Sundays’ co-founder and head of product, Noah Morse. For starters, there’s no puffy leather upholstery to be seen—just the brand’s “Live Life Performance Fabric,” a stain-resistant blend of polyester, cotton, linen, and viscose in versatile greige. The sleek shape and smooth (and quiet!) reclining mechanism is another perk, along with the fact that a small throw pillow is all you need to hide the motion control buttons along the arm. So long, levers. While the Sundays team was being tech-savvy, they also added convenient charging ports so you can plug in your phone while you chill out.

The feedback has been a lot of “oohs and aahs,” according to Morse. “I was recently visiting the Sundays showroom in NYC and overheard a customer say, ‘I didn’t know a recliner could look this good,’ which is really rewarding,” he shares. We’re leaning in—err, back.
