There was a point in our former apartment when I knew I no longer could use a stockpot as a step ladder. Let me explain. I was scrambling to get onto the kitchen counters to reach a rolling pin that lived on top of our upper cabinets when the cookware piece started sliding across the tile floor. I was already squarely out of the falling danger zone, but it occurred to me that it was probably a bad idea to keep relying on it to launch me upwards. We had considered several types of step stools before, but they all seemed to take up too much room. If we had a garage, or even a proper utility closet, it might not be a problem, but neither was the case.
What we needed was a piece that had more than a little lift (i.e. more than one rung); folded down to an extremely narrow size to fit in a slot next to our washer/dryer; and was light enough to constantly be moved around and stowed away. The Midoli 3-step ladder, which I learned about after another Domino editor uncovered it during Prime Day, met all those requirements. To our delight, it lived up to the expectations we had—not always the case with an in-the-dark Amazon purchase.
Midoli Step Ladder

For one, since it’s made with aircraft-grade aluminum alloy, it weighs no more than a small, empty carry-on suitcase and can hold up to 330 pounds. That’s important when you have to constantly grab it from a weird corner of the house, as is the size it folds down to. The Midoli, which is 19 inches wide when open, becomes just 2 inches wide when broken down, allowing it to slide into the crannie next to our washer and dryer with ease. It can also be stashed next to our bookshelf when we need to leave it out, and the non-slip rubber on its feet keeps it in place when I’m reaching above our new fridge for mixing bowls and roasting pans.
We used it for more than a year before moving into a new apartment and, miraculously, the space next to our laundry is about the same width. The ladder slides right in! Most importantly, my pots only get used for one thing now: cooking.
