Over on her Instagram, Reserve Home, Mallory Fletchall chronicles the ever-evolving process of layering character and warmth onto a once-basic Brooklyn rental. While she’s taken on her share of major projects, including a dining nook with built-in banquette seating, her latest project—hiding her kitchen’s aged dishwasher—came together in less than five minutes flat.
Ever since moving in three years ago, Fletchall has sought out ways to disguise the dishwasher’s wear and tear. In a kitchen where every detail—from antique accents to perfectly placed ceramics—is carefully considered, a scratched-up stainless front feels out of place. So when she decided to bring some much-needed charm and coziness to her “very beige” space, she knew it was time to rethink the painted ivory beadboard that had been concealing the dishwasher. “When I saw another creator post about this curtain hack, I knew I had to try it,” she says. After taking some quick measurements, she was set with dimensions to guide her search for a magnetic adjustable curtain rod and a pair of easily interchangeable cafe curtains. For a custom effect, she hemmed the ready-made curtains to the perfect length.
While the rod looks dainty, “the magnet is strong,” Fletchall says. “As long as you place it directly above the dishwasher handle, you can grab both when opening and closing the dishwasher.” The project is proof that working smarter, not harder, pays off: “I love that the curtain style can change up the look easily depending on if you want something more English Cottage or perhaps something more minimal to fit with a modern kitchen,” she shares. Now, a miniature landscape and an Art Deco-style antique mirror complete the kitchen’s dreamy coffee corner—zero time-worn appliances in sight.
