IKEA Has Announced 26 Fresh Collections—These Are the 3 We’re Dying to See

It’s an exciting day at IKEA’s headquarters in Älmhult, Sweden. As part of its annual Democratic Design Days event, the retailer unveiled a slew of new collections (26, to be exact) that are currently in the works. The upcoming projects, which range in focus from health and urban living to sustainability and art, will begin to hit stores this autumn and continue to roll out over the course of the next coming years.

We’ll be honest: There’s a lot to digest. In addition to dropping new in-house lines and expanding existing collaborations with such big-name companies as Adidas and LEGO, IKEA will also be teaming up with a fresh crew of design studios and organizations, including World Surf League and solar panel purveyor Little Sun, between now and 2021. Overwhelmed yet? While IKEA didn’t dive into the specifics for each project, we were able to spot a few winning collections in the mix. Here are the three we’re most excited to see in the near future.

RÅVAROR: Small-Space Products for the Nomadic

In an effort to address the challenges city dwellers face with decorating small spaces, the new RÅVAROR collection answers the essential question: How do you make a 100-something-square-foot living room cozy and comfortable? The in-house line will include 20 ultra-versatile products that are easy to pack up, stack, and move out the door (IKEA hinted at a mini kitchen and foldable daybed in the announcement). The collection will debut globally in September 2020.

Tom Dixon: Urban Farming Made Easy

Tom Dixon’s next project couldn’t come soon enough. We already know what happens when IKEA puts its Scandinavian spin on the industrial designer’s furniture. Now we get to see what occurs when the two go green. Coming to a store near you in 2021, Dixon’s collaboration wants to change the way we approach growing vegetables and other greens at home. The collection will focus on smart and functional products—think: stackable miniature gardens—that will encourage sustainable food habits. Our green thumbs unanimously approve.

ROGNAN: Robotic Living Rooms That Change With Your Mood

IKEA and Ori, an American startup company that makes robotic furniture for modern living, will debut an all-in-one platform system that can easily change functions from a bedroom to a walk-in closet to a storage-friendly living room. The collection, dubbed ROGNAN, will launch in Hong Kong and Japan in 2020.
