A WHIMSICAL OFFICE MAKEOVER

Blogging at home is a wonderful luxury, until the blog starts to outgrow the home. That’s exactly what happened to me. My poor husband, dog, and I were suffering in a crowded city apartment. While a studio is every up-and-coming blogger’s dream, a spot for props, DIY projects, and client meetings is much more professional in an office than a living room. Set inside a lakeside 1925 historic beaux arts building in Oakland, CA, this small studio space has everything I could need. Bonus, there’s a small English garden just outside for those much desired breaths of fresh air.

The first step to designing the studio was choosing the paint color. Although the majority of the space would be painted white – most suitable for photoshoots – an accent wall was a must on our list. A dainty, ballet slipper pink was perfect for the wall behind the desk, with a cool aqua contrast for the neighboring ceiling beam and drain pipe.

The (budget-friendly!) key to decorating a small office space is ensuring that each major piece of furniture serves multiple functions. Our IKEA gateleg table is used for styling tablescapes, holding in-person meetings, crafting, and lunch breaks. When not in use, it easily collapses, sitting out of the way, and allowing us more space for movement. A wire cable suspended above, is perfect for hanging backdrops and party props of all kinds.

I love our bookcase’s open design and price (also an IKEA buy). It neatly holds everything from dishes and party props to paintings, books, and magazines. When it comes to storage, like-objects are grouped together for easy access during photo-shoots and brainstorming sessions. The self-closing drawers are perfect for organizing paper lanterns, assorted cardstock, and garlands. Its narrow depth and

creates the illusion of added space.

Craft supplies can easily get out of order. A simple metal cabinet with labeled drawers keeps brushes, balloons, and various tools neatly tucked away. The drawer handles were spray-painted gold, adding a slight touch of Hollywood Regency to the decor. On top, sits a collection of coveted titles, craft tools, and quirky decor accents that give the space life.

The studio’s slight “L” shape allows a desk to sit tucked back with a view of the lake and gardens. Above the desk is a trendy tassel garland in Planning Pretty’s signature color scheme. A DIY neon name sign adds the perfect lasting touch.

There’s no shortage of color in this small office, where party props blend in with the studio’s decor. Color is used to evoke whimsy, joy and capture our playfully elegant style.
