As the renowned wellness guru Derek Zoolander once famously said, “Moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty.”
Just kidding, guys. But we all know how important water is for your daily well-being and overall health. But what if there was a better, more beneficial way to drink it?
There’s where Dotti comes in. The woman that famously got Alicia Keys makeup free, Dotti (one name only!) is the celebrity makeup artist known for her organic and clean lifestyle.
On an unusually warm January evening in New York, Dotti gathered with a handful of other beauty and wellness experts. And while the whole panel was full of incredible details and tips, the entire crowd and panel was blown away by this one water tip that Dotti said changed her life, skin, and sleep. (So much so that the panel moderator, the incredible beauty veteran Jane Larkworthy, had her repeat the below tips again so we could all jot it down.)
Dotti’s learned her life-changing tip come from a Georgian woman whom she went to see for a lymphatic massage (Turns out this tip is a classic Eastern European water technique too.). “She told me this, and I swear to god I’m addicted: From when I get up in the morning, until 2:00 p.m., I drink two liters of water. From 2:00-5:00 p.m., I drink one liter of water, and after 5:00, I just sip my water.”
So what exactly does this water schedule do for you? Let us count thee ways.
1. The first hit of water in the morning flushes our your kidneys and liver.
2. Since you’re full and efficiently hydrated, you’ll need less balms and lotions, and your skin will look better. “Seriously, ever since I’ve been doing this, [even though] we’re in winter, I do not need lip balm,” says Dotti. “I was literally on set yesterday, and we do 10 hours nonstop, and I stick to my regime and no lip balm needed.”
3. You won’t wake up having to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. “I’m like a camel, I’d drink forever,” says Dotti. “[This schedule] stops you from peeing eight times a night. You don’t get that broken sleep, which means your body rests.”
So, here it is again:
Morning-2:00 p.m.:
Drink two liters.
2:00-5:00 p.m.:
Drink another liter.
5:00 p.m.-bedtime:
Just take sips of water for the rest of the evening, as needed. (Not huge amounts, but a few glasses, taken in sips, are a-okay.)
“Challenge yourself to do it,” says Dotti. “I’m not lying—I do not break from the schedule at all. I stick to it, and I’m smiling the whole day.”
