Picture what you consider to be French decor: The image likely includes gilded mirrors, subdued shades, and maybe an errant sprig of pampas grass (or four). Clare Vivier’s take flips the stereotype squarely on its head. Her just-launched Anthropologie collection is all about primary colors and striking graphics—maximalist-friendly and perfect for summer.

The Clare V. x Anthropologie line features more than 30 products in both home and fashion accessories, each inspired by her time in Île de Ré, France. Anyone looking for some bright new additions to their space is in for a treat. Everything from furniture to notebooks includes playful motifs specifically engineered to make you smile.

We figured there had to be a story behind the punchy designs, so we chatted with Vivier to learn how she came up with her three favorite products.

The Beach Towels

All three include phrases Vivier picked up on summers with her family: station balnéaire (“seaside resort”) and leçons de natation (“swimming lessons”), for example. “They were inspired by a hand-painted sign at the local public swimming pool in the small town where my husband grew up,” explains the designer.

The Tableware

“The inspiration was French porcelain that my sister-in-law has in France,” explains Vivier of the dessert plates and coffee cups—though she tweaked the classic to fit Clare V.’s vibrant aesthetic. Note the red lipstick-printed mug.

If she had to pick a favorite, these versatile armchairs would win: “They’re super-cute for inside or outside use, adding a graphic element to any setting,” says Vivier. Based on her brand’s woven leather bags, they certainly bring the energy—whether that’s to your backyard pool or simply a cramped apartment balcony.
