It’s safe to say that 2020 was the year of space-saving hacks and family-friendly interiors, so it’s no surprise that Domino’s most popular post on Pinterest in 2020 includes both. Crowned “the ultimate bunk bed” by designer Amber Lewis, the setup is playful enough to keep little ones entertained but practical enough to decrease clutter, resulting in pure magic for, well, everyone.

While the tall, narrow room initially posed a problem for Lewis—how do you fit two beds?—it all came together when she ultimately opted for bunks. Designed with cohesion in mind, the furniture is made of the same white oak as is used in the rest of the home. A slatted wood base allows more natural light to filter through, thus avoiding the cave-like feel of most bottom bunks.

A custom staircase with a handrail for youngsters (or parents who’ve fallen asleep mid–story time), a built-in bookcase to house everything from knickknacks to school supplies, and carefully concealed drawers at the bed’s base for extra linens have the structure working double duty in more ways than one. Dressed in earth tones, kids will be dreaming of this space well into adulthood.
