What goes into the selection of paint shades and color palettes isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Pratt & Lambert’s color expert Ashley Banbury tells Domino what inspired the brand’s 2018 color of the year selection.

“Throughout the year, we are diligently doing our homework: attending trade shows, reading trend reports, and keeping up with the latest fashion and pop culture trends from around the world,” says Banbury of the process of choosing these colors. “From this, you start to see themes, and stories evolve and write themselves. Each story has a tone represented through color.” Those seeking cozy living spaces should look to warm colors in 2018, while anyone looking to inject vibrancy into their spaces will need bold brights.

Color Of The Year: Heron
“Heron is such a versatile color,” says Banbury. “It is a statement neutral that can stand alone or be used as a canvas to your home’s artwork and accessories.”

It’s ideal for a bedroom as it’s inspired by the quiet midnight backdrop of the galaxy, and creates a sense of calm—precisely what you want at bedtime. “It is grounding and creates an elegant contrast against shades of green, mustard yellow and cranberry reds.”

Other complementary pairings include soft pink, greige, dune, and crisp white. Try incorporating Heron on the exterior of your home; opt for the front door or accents like shutters for a sophisticated look. “Heron is stunning and dramatic like the night sky,” says Banbury. “It can be quiet, private, and calm, evoking the serenity we are all seeking in our everyday life.”
