The Century-Old Mattress Brand That Probably Isn’t on Your Radar (But Should Be)

TLDR: My cramped bedroom now feels like a luxury hotel.

I’d never heard of Ostermoor, so when I saw an impeccably styled Instagram ad for their blue and white ticking striped mattresses, I assumed it was some new Swedish mattress company. I was wrong on both counts. Ostermoor is a New York City-founded mattress outfit that has been in operation since 1853.

Seeing as I had just relocated my family to Manhattan, I liked the brand alignment—which, admittedly, might not be the best way to choose one’s mattress company, but also…why not? My husband and I like a plush mattress, which seems out of the ordinary these days with so many companies focused on the word “firm.” So we opted for the Bedford, Ostermoor’s “most indulgent medium plush hybrid mattress.” Here’s how it played out.

The Delivery and Setup

Ostermoor’s mattresses are boxed, and so delivery and setup is pretty much the same as any other boxed mattress company. Cut open the cardboard and—boom—it’s ready. One thing, though: The Bedford is heavy (about 90 pounds). You will definitely need two people to hoist it onto a bed frame

The Design

What immediately piqued my curiosity about Ostermoor (aside from the on-point branding) was the two-tier construction. Each mattress features a bottom base of ultrasonically welded pocket coils, meaning there are no glues or adhesives used. The top layer is a latex foam blend and features a dual layer of delicately pliable microcoils, along with a hand-tufted finish.

To sum it up, the Bedford model offers Ostermoor’s “most intricate support systems to encourage proper spinal alignment and comfortably cradle your body while you rest.” It also has the highest coil count out of the collection for premium support.

As far as aesthetics, it goes without saying that Ostermoor’s mattresses are cute thanks to their signature ticking stripes. They’re so nice looking it’s almost a shame they have to be covered with sheets.

The Sleep

Every mattress is about that first impression—the moment you fall back onto the bed and it’s either magic or tragic. With Ostermoor, the experience is bliss right off the bat. The Bedford feels like a hotel mattress; it’s plush but buoyant, hugging you with a little bounce. The first time I laid on it, I was silent for a full five minutes, just taking in what felt like utter luxury.

My first sleep was a bit of an adjustment. Our previous mattress was a Parachute mattress (which I also highly recommend) and it was quite worn in. Perhaps we hadn’t realized how used our old mattress was because the experience of snoozing on the Bedford is quite light, like you weigh practically nothing. After a few days, it felt like the mattress knew my body and sleep positions perfectly. (Ostermoor does note that their mattresses “may take up to 48 hours to expand fully.”) I’m a restless sleeper—I do a lot of tossing and turning between my side and stomach. I started to notice that I wasn’t moving around as much, maybe because the mattress offered a bit more of a cradle than others.

The Final Word

If you prefer a plush mattress with true hotel-like comfort, Ostermoor’s Bedford is a top-of-the-line option. True, the price tag isn’t cheap at over $4,000 for a queen size but if you are ready to invest in a quality product, I wouldn’t think twice about spending the money.

Plus, you can rest easy knowing that Ostermoor offers a 100-night trial. That’s almost three months to decide if it’s right for you.If you ask me though, it won’t take you that long to realize how good your mattress is.
