Here’s something I thought I’d never say: I really like hand-washing my dishes. This wasn’t always the case, and it had absolutely everything to do with the drying rack I was using. For the longest time, I relied on a simple, standard plastic rack that would inevitably collect water (and later mold) in its crevices. I felt like if I wasn’t sudsing down my cereal bowls, I was vigorously cleaning my drying station. Then I got my hands on Dorai’s over-the-sink pad and started to actually enjoy the chore. On one end, it’s a thick slab made out of diatomaceous earth, Dorai’s go-to, a quick-drying material that’s a naturally occurring mineral. The other half features slats that I can sprawl out over the sink and rest dishes on. We love it so much here at Domino that it made the cut for our 2024 Good Design Awards.
So dare I say, I want to upgrade again?

Dorai just announced it’s dropping a new dish rack this month, and it’s essentially the mothership of all drying racks. Unlike my flat pad, which can really only hold the aftermath of one home-cooked meal, this one is an elevated rack made out of rustproof aluminum. It can stash up to 11 plates, four chef’s knives (stowed safely in a bamboo lidded compartment), silverware, and four glasses or bottles. Plus there is a separate slot for cutting boards and baking sheets—easily the most awkward items to balance on a traditional rack.
Underneath it all is a diatomaceous earth base that dries superfast (we’re talking no droplets visible in about a minute), so you don’t have to worry about it getting moldy. The new rack won’t start shipping until late October, but to entice people to preorder it today, the brand is offering a $24 discount. Although, can you really put a price on a clean kitchen?
