When interior designer Alyssa Owens took a look at her client Stephanie Berger’s Brooklyn bedroom for the first time, there was an obvious eyesore was staring back at her. The two windows on the wall where Owens wanted to put Berger’s new king-sized bed were not spaced evenly apart. Coupled with the fact that the apartment is a rental and no structural changes were on the table, Owens had to come up with a creative solution to make the offset windows less of a thing. Her fix? Curtains—lots of them.
Behind Berger’s Lulu and Georgia bed, Owens hung six sheer curtain panels. When we first offered a glimpse of the room, Domino readers wanted to know exactly where the designer sourced her client’s colorful pink chiffon drapes. She’s since revealed to us that they came from Etsy vendor Cushions and More. Her thinking was that a lightweight fabric would blur the edges of the room without getting in the way of the sun the same way linen or cotton might.
“It has this luminous, almost liquid quality,” says Owens. “It catches the light, creates a hazy veil around the Marry Ball painting on the wall, and transforms what could have been awkward windows into a space that feels cocooning.”
The seller offers a wide range of colors and heights, as well as the option to customize the width. “It made it easy to get the exact look we wanted,” shares Owens. So what did her order look like? While Owens had originally planned for two sets of curtains, to achieve a sumptuous, enveloping look, she ended up buying three pairs (six panels total). Two sets were in the color salmon, one set was in the hue Petal, each with a 122-inch height and 85-inch width with a pencil-pleat top with white hooks and a plain stitched hem. Her hot tip: order some swatches before you commit, as the tones can translate differently in person.

Another perk of going with colorful curtains over standard white? They’re a great workaround when you aren’t allowed to paint. “They add depth, texture, and color without altering the walls,” says the designer. Curtains in general proved to be a versatile tool for her. In Berger’s office nook, she mounted an ice-blue velvet curtain to the ceiling to separate it from the dressing room. “It instantly created the feeling of a bespoke walk-in,” she shares. Fabric is this pro’s secret weapon.
