Helmed by Emily Ward and Louisa Pierce, design studio Pierce & Ward is known for rich yet grounded interiors that are layered with intention and little playfulness. (I profiled Ward’s West Marin retreat a few years back, and it’s a brilliant study in mixing vintage with retailers like Crate & Barrel, Nickey Kehoe, and even Urban Outfitters.) There’s never a hint of stuffiness in their work, and that mindset funnels all the way down to the walls.

Recently, Ward took to Instagram to wax poetic about the material she and Pierce turn to when they’re walking the line of affordability and durability, not to mention add warmth to a space. “Louisa and I love using beadboard as a less expensive option over tile and a more resilient option than drywall!” she exclaims. And once you see the decorative paneling in one of their projects, you start to notice it across their portfolio. Swathed in a salmon hue, anchoring stone work, partnered with checkerboard.

“When using beadboard at a wainscoting height, you can buy it sheeted from The Home Depot and paint it,” says Ward. “It’s a really nice option for bathrooms and kitchens because you can wipe it—it feels cleaner than drywall.” How’s that for some reno motivation?
