For the past year or so, I’ve been playing a game that we design editors like to call sofa roulette. Here’s how it works: I’ll test out a couch from a brand, realize it’s fine, but not perfect, and then when my husband and I can’t stand it any longer, we sell it and swap in a new one. (Let this be Exhibit X, Y, and Z on why purchasing a sofa online can be so frustrating.) The benefit of all that back-and-forth, other than the strength that comes with hauling sofa pieces up and down my building’s stairs, is that I can confidently say I’ve found a winner that I’m sticking with: the Cozey Atmosphere sofa.
Cozey Atmosphere Sofa

I’d been served Cozey ads on Instagram and was lured in by the Atmosphere’s modular shape and resemblance to Hay’s Mags sectional, a design I’ve coveted for years but never had the funds to purchase. Atmosphere has a similar look and feel, but unlike Mags, is available with an in-seat storage option—and, most importantly, is about half the price. They even both come in cream-colored bouclé, a fabric that’s been done to death, but, hey, it’s a classic these days for a reason.

I ordered the three-seat, one-arm configuration, in the exact length we had available in our tiny living room; for context, there are eight section options available to choose from, including a U-shape. (One day!) While the Atmosphere arrived a few days later in ten boxes, free shipping can take up to a month depending on the fabric you choose according to the Cozey site. Each part of the sofa came naked, meaning the slipcovers were in separate bags. I happened to be out of town the day the boxes hit our doorstep, so my husband and a friend surprised me by carrying each box up the stairs—lighter than they thought!—and putting the whole thing together in an hour and a half sans instructions. To be clear, there were instructions, but the papers happened to be in the bottom of the last box they opened. I like to think that assembling the whole thing without orderly steps speaks to my loved one’s resourcefulness, and how easy it is to put together a Cozey sofa.

Both my husband and friend noted how breezy the pieces were to put into place, and that even though they don’t all clip together (the arm does), the sofa hasn’t shifted in place at all on our rug. (Hardwood floors can be another story, so Cozey makes connectors to keep individual pieces from sliding.) The cushions over the storage are made from high density foam that’s sturdy and soft even after hours of Zelda (true story), and they’re easy to lift when we need to get a board game from underneath the sofa. As two tall people, the cushion height (nearly 18 inches) is perfect, as in we don’t have to lift ourselves out of a deep squat just to get up.

Some things to note: The machine-washable slipcovers don’t budge because they’re held into place with heavy duty Velcro, but it’s important to note that after a couple of months, the boucle is matted in the spots we sit on. (The back support still looks pristine, though.) The only other downside to the Atmosphere is that we’ve lost the slim Apple TV remote between the cushions a couple of times, and because there isn’t one solid base, it’s slid all the way down to the floor. Annoying.

Even though the Atmosphere is here to stay, I still plan to play sofa roulette—but this time, with my Cozey. Thanks to the 18 different slipcover options, I can swap in different colors and fabrics. (The green corduroy is so tempting.) Plus, we have big plans to add an ottoman and make it an L-shape. And if we ever move, we know it’s lightweight enough to transfer to a new home, too, meaning we never have to really say goodbye to our new favorite sofa.
