Charge your cameras, a Supermoon is coming! Saturday’s full moon is actually a Supermoon, and we want to make sure you enjoy every bit of it. Prep in advance, and spend Saturday evening under the moon and stars, in style.

First, what exactly is a Supermoon? According to Earthsky.org , a Supermoon is “a new or full moon closely coinciding with  perigee  – the moon’s closest point to Earth in its orbit.” In layman’s terms, it’s a really big moon. Read on to find out how to set up the perfect Supermoon sighting soiree in your backyard, on your roof, at the park, etc.

Seating

Sprawl on a blanket, relax in a lawn chair, or perfectly position a floor pillow or two. Create a comfortable zone for spending lots of time with your eyes (and cameras) pointed toward the sky. Layering a few pillows will keep you comfortably propped and neck-strain free.

Supplies

A warm August evening practically begs for chilled wine, a rustic cheeseboard, and an artisanal bread to share. Select items that don’t require a lot of prep on-site. A moonrise picnic is a casual one. Pack all essentials in a picnic basket or tote with an ice pack or two–it’s still summer after all. (Don’t forget the corkscrew!).

Outdoor Entertainment

In case actually staring at the moon gets a bit boring, bring along a few ways to enjoy spending the evening outside with the beautiful moon overhead. Lawn games, a deck of cards, just simple, screen-free amusements to make the most of your time outdoors. A portable speaker will add to the ambience, too.

Prep Your Tech

You won’t want to walk away from the Supermoon without at least one incredible Instagram. Use long-exposure apps like LongExpo , or even explore a few phone enhancements to get the perfect shot. And make sure your phone has plenty of battery life, too! A Mophie case will ensure uninterrupted power and plenty of pictures. If you miss Saturday’s moon, or if there are (gasp!) clouds, don’t worry–you’ll have another chance to enjoy a Supermoon on Sunday, September 27!

And finally…show us your Supermoon photos! Tag @dominomag on Instagram and we’ll be sure to take a look!
